Thalapathy Vijay‘s Mersal is on a roll and how! Ever since its release on October 18, the film has been ruling the box office. The film on its first day got off to a phenomenal start as the film raked in Rs 43.50 crore at the worldwide market. While the film opened to mixed reviews, Mersal has been storming the box office. As per the latest update, Mersal continues to hold the numero uno position in the October 28-29th weekend. The film continues to reign in Chennai beating Golmaal Again, Geostorm, Secret Superstar and Meyadha Maan, The Tmail even after ten days of its release has managed to nudge out new releases like Geostorm. And this is despite the number of controversies the film has found itself ever since its release. Post its release, the film became a raging topic of discussion because movie allegedly displayed an unfair portrayal of the GST concept in India. A certain political party condemned the movie, even went on to demand that the controversial GST scene be deleted. Doctors also spoke against the film as it showcased the medical industry poorly. They reportedly leaked pirated links of the film. Last week, the Telugu version that was to release got delayed, fuelling speculations of a certificate not being issued to this version. Most recently, a leading distributor has gone on to question the authenticity fo the film’s box office figures. Despite all these topics of discussion, the film continues to reign! Reports suggest the film has grossed Rs 200 crore at the Tamil Nadu box office, thus becoming the second film after Enthiran to cross this mark =on the local front. The film became the third film after Enthiran and Kabali to cross the 1 million mark. The movie also has been declared the third highest grosser in Malaysia.
Mersal stars Thalapathy Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Nithya Menen, Kajal Aggarwal. The film follows the story of two brothers – Dr Maaran whose aim in life is provide medical practices for the needy and Magician Vetri, who is all set to avenge his father’s death.
