The release date of the highly anticipated 2.0 is turning out to be a huge topic of conversation in the industry. Touted as the most expensive Indian film, the Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer, which is a sci-fi thriller, was earlier scheduled to release in Diwali this year. However, the incomplete VFX work pushed the date to Republic day 2018. Post that, there were rumors that the film is further pushed to April 13, which happens to be Vishu (Tamil New Year) and will help the film in getting a blockbuster opening.
Now as per a source close to the producers, the film is on schedule and will release on January 25. Film critic and trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai confirmed the news on his twitter account and tweeted, “#2PointO Update – As per sources close 2 @LycaProductions, 3D sci-fi thriller is on schedule 4 a Jan 25 Release. Official announcement soon!”. Interestingly, Akshay Kumar’s Bollywood biographical film Padman based on Arunachalam Murugunantham is hitting the screens on the same weekend. If this clash will not get averted, it’ll be Akshay vs Akshay at the box office, and the business of the films will be affected especially in the northern markets, where Akki has a huge fan following. It’s very important that 2.0 (Robot 2) should get a solo release, to recover its huge investments which is more than Rs 400 crore. Directed by Shankar, the film also features Amy Jackson in a pivotal role. Which will be the most appropriate date for 2.0 to release?
